Why Thousands of Australians Over 50 Are Rethinking Chemist-Shelf Supplements and Switching to This Independent Whole-Food Brand

From a cupboard of half-finished bottles to labels nobody has time to read, older Aussies are turning the bottle over, and many are choosing the whole leaf, root or mushroom with nothing added.

Turning 50 in Australia often arrives with a longer shopping list. Somewhere between the reading glasses and the weekly pill organiser sits the supplement aisle: a wall of bottles, half of them on special, each promising something different.

So, like most of us, you grab the one you always grab. But here's what many people never do: turn the bottle over and read the back. Many mainstream tablets list binders, fillers and coatings alongside the ingredients you actually went in for.

The Part of the Label Most of Us Skip

Most mainstream supplements are built from isolated nutrients: single vitamins and minerals made in a lab, then pressed into a tablet with processing aids such as magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide to help it hold its shape. These ingredients are common and permitted. They just aren't the food itself.

Freeze-dried whole foods start from the other end. Instead of building a supplement from parts, you begin with the plant: the whole leaf, the whole root or the whole mushroom, dried gently and put in a capsule, with nothing added.

What makes Forest Super Foods different?

Their bestselling capsules contain one thing: the whole leaf, root or mushroom, freeze-dried, in a plant-based capsule. No binders, fillers, flow agents, extracts or synthetics, just the food itself with nothing added.

5 Reasons Australians Over 50 Are Making Forest Super Foods Their Go-To Whole-Food Brand

  1. 1

    Whole Foods, Not Lab-Made Isolates

Each one is kept as close to how it grows as possible. The Moringa is the whole leaf, the Ashwagandha is the whole root, and the Lion's Mane and Turkey Tail contain both the fruiting body and the mycelium.

  2. 2

A Label You Can Read in One Breath

Each of the four bestsellers lists one whole food and a plant-based capsule, with no binders, fillers, flow agents or synthetics to decode. In the founder's words: what's on the label is what's in the product.

  3. 3

    Freeze-Dried, Never Irradiated

Freeze-drying is one of the gentlest ways to dry a plant. In a laboratory comparison of moringa leaf, freeze-dried samples kept more natural plant compounds than air-, sun- or oven-dried ones (Ademiluyi et al., 2018). Forest's imported ingredients are also never irradiated on entry to Australia.

  4. 4

Certified Organic, Australian Grown & Third-Party Tested

Forest is upfront about origin. The Moringa and Ashwagandha are certified organic and grown in India, where both plants have been used for centuries. The Lion's Mane and Turkey Tail are grown, dried and packaged here in Australia. All four are third-party tested for purity, potency and heavy metals.

  5. 5

    Australian-Owned & Independent Since 2012

Founder Justin Snyder started Forest Super Foods in 2012 with one rule: never compromise product quality to increase profit. It's still Australian-owned and "independent by choice", with a local support team whose promise is "Real people. No chatbots."

Ademiluyi AO, Aladeselu OH, Oboh G, Boligon AA. Drying alters the phenolic constituents, antioxidant properties, alpha-amylase, and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory properties of Moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf. Food Sci Nutr. 2018;6:2123-2133. doi:10.1002/fsn3.770

Abstract

Moringa oleifera leaf is a popular green leafy vegetable which has found its usefulness in the preparation of traditional stews and soups. Like most green leafy vegetables which are not around year-round, the leaf is usually dried and pulverized for storage and easier handling, and despite the popularity of this processing technique, there is dearth of information on how drying affects the health-promoting properties of the leaves. Hence, this study sought to investigate the effect of some drying methods (freeze-drying, sun, air and oven drying) on the phytoconstituents, antioxidant properties, and biological activities of moringa leaf.

This study revealed that drying methods significantly altered the phytoconstituents (phenolics, flavonoids, vitamin C, tannin, saponin, phytate, oxalate, alkaloid, cardenolides, and cardiac glycosides), antioxidant capacities (reducing power, Fe2+ chelating, ABTS radical, DPPH, and hydroxyl radical scavenging abilities), and enzyme inhibitory (alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase) effects of the leaf, with freeze-drying being the most promising method for preserving the nutraceutical properties of moringa leaf. However, for practical application, the order of preference of the drying methods which ensures adequate retention of phytoconstituents and possibly biological activities of the leaf as observed in this study is freeze-drying, then air drying, then sun drying, then oven drying, in the order of decreasing magnitude.

Key findings

  • Total phenolics (mg/g): freeze-dried 68.75, air-dried 59.38, sun-dried 50.00, oven-dried 46.88.
  • Vitamin C (mg/g): freeze-dried 52.94, air-dried 41.17, sun-dried 35.29, oven-dried 23.53.
  • A laboratory comparison of moringa leaf only, with no human participants.
